Solid Energies Wins NASA Phase II STTR Contract

Solid Energies Inc. (SEI), an Anaheim-based developer of advanced solid-state and semi-solid lithium-ion battery technology, today announced it has been awarded a NASA Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase II contract  to advance ultra-low-temperature semi-solid lithium-ion batteries for space flight applications. The 24-month program runs from June 2026 through June 2028. Today's batteries cannot meet the demands of NASA's most ambitious missions, where surface temperatures can fall to –60 °C during 14-day lunar nights and on the Martian surface. Conventional lithium-ion cells are typically limited to roughly –20 °C, forcing missions to rely on heavy, power-hungry thermal management. SEI's technology is engineered to close that gap while simultaneously improving energy density and safety. Beyond NASA missions such as Artemis, Mars rovers, and deep-space probes, the company sees applications across defense, commercial aerospace, cold-climate electric vehicles, and grid energy storage. The technology is protected by a portfolio of 10 issued U.S. patents spanning electrolyte chemistry, cell architecture, and manufacturing.
